About Sikandra (Akbar's Tomb)

Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra is one of the most peaceful heritage sites in Agra. The tomb of the greatest Mughal emperor stands at the centre of a huge walled garden, where blackbuck, spotted deer, and langur monkeys wander across the lawns.

The monumental southern gateway is covered in bold geometric inlay of white marble and coloured stone, and its four marble minarets are often seen as a forerunner of the Taj Mahal's minarets. The tomb itself rises in five storeys, from red sandstone arcades at the base to a white marble terrace at the top.

It sees far fewer visitors than the Taj Mahal or Agra Fort, which makes it a lovely place for a slow walk and photographs.

History & significance

Akbar is believed to have planned his own tomb and chosen the site himself. He died in 1605, and the tomb was completed by his son Jahangir around 1613. The design mixes Islamic, Hindu, and Persian elements, reflecting the open-minded spirit of Akbar's reign.

The tomb was damaged and looted during a Jat uprising in 1688, and was later repaired, including restoration work in the colonial period.
