Agra Metro's priority corridor — a 6 km stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar — was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6 March 2024. This makes Agra the fourth city in Uttar Pradesh to have a metro rail system.

Agra Metro is owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Agra Metro Phase 1 consists of two lines: Yellow Line (Line 1) from Sikandra to Taj East Gate with 14 stations (6 elevated + 7 underground + 1), and Blue Line (Line 2) from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar with 15 stations. Total network length is 29.65 km with 27 stations.

Currently the 6 km priority corridor is operational, covering six stations: Taj East Gate, Basai, Fatehabad Road, Taj Mahal (Purani Mandi), Agra Fort, and Mankameshwar (Jama Masjid). The first three are elevated stations and the last three are underground.

The entire Phase 1 project — covering both corridors and all 27 stations spanning 29.65 km — is expected to be completed by 2026.

Agra Metro connects major heritage and tourist sites including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Mankameshwar Temple, Fatehabad Road tourism zone, and Sikandra (Akbar's Tomb). The metro was specifically planned to enhance tourist connectivity across the city.
