About Jama Masjid
The Jama Masjid is Agra's great congregational mosque, standing at the edge of the old city just across from Agra Fort railway station. Its red sandstone walls, white marble details, and three domes with a distinctive zigzag pattern make it one of the most recognisable buildings in Agra.
A wide flight of steps leads up to the gateway and into a large open courtyard, with an ablution tank at the centre and the prayer hall beyond. The mosque is still an active place of worship, and on Fridays and during Eid the courtyard fills with worshippers.
The Jama Masjid is the gateway to Agra's old bazaars. Kinari Bazaar, Johri Bazaar, and the lanes around them are known for petha, wedding textiles, and street food.
History & significance
The mosque was built by Jahanara Begum, the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan, and completed in 1648. It was dedicated to her and is sometimes called the Jami Masjid.
It was once linked to Agra Fort by an octagonal square called Tripolia Chowk, which was cleared in the colonial period to make way for the railway line.
